Review For Desperate Acts Of Magic | |
Gold's conventional script is enlivened by engaging performances, authentic tricks and amusing noir-parody touches as it delves into the often unsavory institutional politics of the magic industry. Justin Chang-Variety Tthe actors are better at making coins disappear than emoting, though brassy blond Dillman is as lively as a hat full of rabbits. Amy Nicholson-Los Angeles Times The story has a few convolutions too many, but a generous sprinkling of tricks and illusions will appeal to fans of magic. Neil Genzlinger-New York Times Desperate Acts of Magic is a pleasant little film. Pete Vonder Haar-Village Voice Does for the world of magic what "The Wrestler" did for another profession based on illusion. Much better than "The Prestige" even though with a more modest provenance. Louis Proyect-rec.arts.movies.reviews Low-key, low-budget but highly likeable comedy about magicians in all their trickery. David Noh-Film Journal International It gives off the alienating feel of an inside joke that you miss in the off chance you're not part of the professional magic business. Diego Costa-Slant Magazine What makes this film impressive is an unending parade of magic tricks performed by experts and filmed without editing tricks or special effects. Mark R.
