Black Americans of Achievement II - Mary McLeod BethunePart of the Black Americans of Achievement, this documentary looks at the career of educator Mary McLeod Bethune. More than just a teacher, Bethune saw the need for black children and adults to have more educational opportunities. She first founded a school for girls, which eventually merged with a school for boys and in 1929 became known as the Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, FL. All of her life, Bethune fought for racial equality, a fight which led to her being appointed a special advisor on race relations and minority groups by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936. Bethune also founded the National Council of Negro Women and was a vice president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1940 to 1955. ~ Cecilia Cygnar, Rovi.
